SUMMARY:The Language of Partner Abuse: Are We Actively Listening?
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated and Sponsored by the DC Peace Team \nDate: Sat. October 4th\, 1:00am-4:00pm ET\nLocation: ONLINE (Zoom link provided after registration and about 24 hrs. before the session)**\nFor questions contact Sal Corbin at sal.corbin@yahoo.com \nEffective partner communication is essential to long-term success\, happiness\, and satisfaction in relationships. Chapman’s Five Love Languages has been a model for understanding the language of our significant other. This session reveals the psychological foundations for unhealthy communication which can challenge people’s sense of safety and security in the world and compromise their identity which informs their relationship choices. Abuse or neglect towards partners can be one of these outcomes. We will focus on language preferences that intentionally or unintentionally cause harm through manipulation\, deceit\, or control. Alternate ways of effectively communication will be visited and demonstrated. \nObjectives:\n1)    Awareness – raise awareness of effective communication\n2)    Insight – Review typical communication styles that produce harm\n3)    Skills – learn how to support families/friends/colleagues/neighbors that are in abusive relations\n4)    Provide resources for partner violence situations

SUMMARY:Recontextualizing Nonviolence
DESCRIPTION:Recontextualizing Nonviolence will offer 8 different topics.  You do not have to take every session in order to engage with the material. There is an option to complete the 8-part workshop series as well that will earn you a certificate of completion. Please fill out this form for any of the topic dates\, outlined below\, you wish to attend. You only need to fill this form once.\n\nThe series is designed to interrogate and transform understandings of nonviolence. Violence is humankind’s oldest enemy. Before there was technology\, race\, gender\, or even the concept of America\, there was violence. Over time\, violence has evolved to wear many faces\, speak many languages\, and infiltrate every system and structure around us. We are all victims and vestiges of this violence.\n\nThis series acknowledges and analyzes white supremacy as a primary vehicle for violence. White supremacy is not just an ideology; it is a regime\, a culture\, a religion\, a framework\, and a mechanism for harm. It shapes the ways we see ourselves\, each other\, our work\, and the world we move through. This workshop series centers the belief that nonviolence must be just as adaptive\, expansive\, and powerful as the violence it seeks to resist. \nUsing lessons from Avatar: The Last Airbender\, metaphors of vampirism and viruses\, constructions inspired by The Wizard of Oz\, and intersectional historical analysis\, we will examine white supremacist violence across personal\, relational\, institutional\, and societal dimensions to develop tools to intervene with care\, accountability\, and radical imagination. This is a space for critical reflection\, community dialogue\, and skill-building. We will challenge conceptions of nonviolence as solely being passive or quiet. Instead\, we will explore nonviolence as confrontation\, disruption\, sacred rage\, and collective healing. \nWe are all affected by white supremacy; thus\, this workshop is for everyone. \nIf you are: \n\ninterested in social justice work\na scholar of race or anti-racism\ninterested in nonviolence work\nan educator\, organizer\, artist\, healer\, or cultural worker\nworking in a nonprofit\, corporation\, community\, or organization\nunknowledgeable or uncomfortable with race\, white supremacy\, resistance\, or violence\na curious mind interested in storytelling\, metaphor\, and pop culture as tools for resistance and liberation\n\nThis workshop is for you.

He has done workforce development training and program management as a Training Coordinator for the Maryland Harm Reduction Institute with the Behavioral Health System of Baltimore. He is now Board Chair and Facilitator for the DC Peace Team in bystander intervention\, community safety\, restorative justice and trauma informed care. His vision is to help others build and maintain healthy relationships with conflict transformation as the primary focus. He holds degrees in Clinical (M.S.) and Educational (PhD) Psychology.

SUMMARY:Embodied Nonviolence: 4-Session Somatic Coaching Group
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays\, September 9\, 16\, 23\, and 30\, 12:00pm – 1:30pm (ET)\nONLINE: Zoom link shared by Leah in a confirmation email a few days after registration.\n(Contact Leah Landry: leah@leahlandryconsulting.com)\n\n\n***************************** \n\nIn this small-group coaching series\, we’ll deepen into the practices introduced in the info session and explore how somatics can support us in living our nonviolent commitments — not just in moments of ease\, but especially in moments of pressure\, conflict\, and change. Together\, we’ll build embodied skills that help us respond with more choice\, care\, and courage. \nEach session will combine guided somatic practices\, reflection\, and group coaching to support your integration of nonviolence from the inside out. \nSession 1: Grounding in Commitment\nWe’ll begin by identifying the values and commitments we want to embody — not just as ideas\, but as felt experiences in the body. Through somatic centering\, we’ll practice staying present\, open\, and grounded so we can act from alignment even when things get tough. \nSession 2: Staying Centered in Change\nNonviolence calls us to meet the unknown with adaptability rather than reactivity. In this session\, we’ll build the embodied capacity to stay rooted and connected in the midst of change\, rather than shutting down or trying to control. \nSession 3: Working with Pressure and Patterns\nWe often fall into automatic behaviors under stress — habits that can pull us out of our nonviolent commitments. This session explores what gets in the way when we’re under pressure and how to interrupt those patterns with more awareness\, compassion\, and skill. \nSession 4: Building Capacity for the Long Haul\nTo sustain our nonviolent path\, we need practices that help us recover\, reconnect\, and remember we’re not alone. This final session focuses on cultivating the inner and relational resources that allow us to stay engaged with care and integrity over time — even when it’s hard.
